Our house stood on the front half of the double lot, the back half being occupied by the wood shed next to Neeley's and a big garden with fruit trees in it next to the alley on the south. Between the wood shed and the garden there was a grape arbor which turned south at right angles at the end of our property and ended at the barn where we kept a Jersey cow. Just before reaching the barn door there were twO rows of covered nests for the hens, six or eight on each side of the grape arbor. My memory is pretty hazy about the whole episode as I was only 18 or 19 months old, but somehow I got the idea that if I set on the eggs in one of the nests they would turn into baby chicks. I don't know whether I thought I was a hen or whether I was just trying to hurry along the process of hatching the eggs; at any rate I refused to answer when I heard my mother and grandmother calling me. I had to get those eggs hatched first. I don't know how long I sat on the nest but I can still see myself sitting on the beck step and my mother searching thru my hair for chicken lice. She kept chuckling about something and swatting me with a rag soaked in coal oil. I couldn't see what she thought was funny.
